The following story is the one most often told in Vedic mythology: Shiva and his wife Parvati had a son. Shortly after birth, Shiva went back to the Himalayas in a deep meditation. After a few years he wanted to go back to his family. Arriving at his home, he saw a handsome boy embracing his wife tightly. Blinded by jealousy, he beheaded the supposed intruder. Parvati was so upset that she asked the gods for help to keep him alive. She was told to cut off the head of the next creature she sees in the forest and place it his body. Well, she saw an elephant. Shiva, plagued by guilt, decided that from now on, anyone who starts a prayer should first name Ganesha. Ihr wurde verk\u00fcndet, sie solle das n\u00e4chste Lebewesen, dass ihr im Wald begegnet, den Kopf abschlagen und ihn auf seinen K\u00f6rper setzen. Es war ein Elefant. Shiva, von Schuldgef\u00fchlen geplagt, entschied, dass von nun an Jeder zu Beginn eines Gebetes den Namen Ganesha nennen soll.
